A day in a life of Dutch Summer School student (in Drenthe)

The alarm clock rings at 7.15am. It's hard to leave the cosy bed, but hey - this is not a holiday. I'm here to learn Dutch, so I better use the time wisely!

My classes start at 1.30pm today (we have afternoon classes for 2 days and then morning classes for the next two and it alternates through the whole course), so I have a bit of time. I make myself a pot of steaming hot tea, make myself comfortable on a couch, and get started.

I first review the vocabulary from the previous days. A long time ago I discovered that vocabulary is possibly the key to speaking the language, so I put a lot of effort into increasing the number of words I know in Dutch. It doesn't matter how good my grammar is - it's quite useless if I don't know the words to put that grammar into practice.

Once I'm done with the vocabulary review I jump on the first #dutchgrammar video for the upcoming class. The #dutchgrammar (also a creation of Kirsten and Bart) is an integral part of the course and I love the fact that we get to prepare for the upcoming class at home, and don't waste time going over grammar in the classroom. If I have more videos to watch I mix them up with learning vocabulary and watching Heb je zien (how funny is that series created by Bart and Kirsten!). The key for me is to mix it up and not to do the same thing for too long, otherwise, it gets boring and overwhelming. If I still have time I might review the #dutchgrammar videos from the previous class, especially if the topic was complex.

Then it's a class time! I have an amazing group to study with, they are all dedicated and work really hard, which makes it so much easier, as everyone comes prepared and we are all at a very similar level.

My favourite part of class are the speaking exercises and those that we do are fun. It's great to be able to utilise the new vocabulary and grammar, correct each other and learn from each other.

The class goes really fast and then I technically have time off. But that would be a waste, right? I take a quick break, have some food, might go to the supermarket to restock, but then I'm back on the couch studying for a few more hours.

I love the fact that it's so peaceful and quiet over here. In all honesty, this place is really boring, but that's exactly what I need! There is no distractions, no temptation to do anything else, but to study. After all learning Dutch is why I came here, and I am so happy I can 100% focus on that goal.

It's 10.30pm and it's a bed time for me! Learning a language takes a lot of energy, so I make sure I get good night sleep

so that I can be ready for the day. Bring it on!
